HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) – A touchdown, a hurry, and a good overall performance. All turned in by three of the Texans rookies tonight.
Jaelen Strong seems so far removed from struggling with his fitness in mini-camp as he caught a touchdown tonight from Tom Savage.
A simple “felt real good” from Strong after the game when asked about his performance.
He looked good too. His patented physicality was on display as he boxed out a defender for his lone catch of the game. The ten yard strike from Savage allowed the rookie to haul in his first career score.
For Strong, he knows if he practices like he played he can keep improving.
Improving off of his initial performance might mean Kevin Johnson is a steal for the Texans. Playing plenty of snaps at defensive back the 16th overall pick from this year’s draft impressed himself, and surely a few others.
“I felt like for my first time I felt like I had an overall pretty good game,” said Johnson.
Communication and being on the same page with the rest of the defense were his takeaways as things he needs to work on heading out of the the first game into this week of practice.
Johnson got a taste of the NFL style quick, but not as fast as defensive lineman Christian Covington.
The Rice product said the strength of the 49ers offensive line was something he needed to adjust to early in the game but he said he found his rhythm after a couple of plays.
Focusing on his assignments was Covington’s goal.
“I wanted to be able to come out here, know my job, execute my job, and give relentless effort.”
Check, check, check, at least on one play. Covington busted through the 49ers offense and forced the opposing quarterback to run for his life. It won’t show up on the stat sheet, but the film room will see it.
